 1.   Summary

This product bulletin announces the availability of FAS3040 storage systems in the February 2007 Quote Tool. This newest addition to the highly successful FAS3000 series delivers unprecedented value in a midrange storage system. This new system is intended to play an important role in the NetApp portfolio by establishing a leadership position in performance, scalability, and value in the FC SAN market vis-à-vis the EMC CLARiiON CX3-40. In addition, FAS3040 continues to set the bar for value in the NAS market compared to EMC Celerra NS-80.

·          The Quote Tool is available now for price quotation.

·          FAS3040 initially ships with Data ONTAP® 7.2.1.1.

·          The FAS3040 system is an extension of the FAS3000 series product line and is an ideal upgrade to FAS3020 systems.

2.   What's New?

The FAS3040 is similar to the other FAS3000 systems in terms of form factor, features, and functionality.

Notes:  (1) All specifications are for an active/active, dual-controller configuration.

             (2) *Capacity is calculated based on using base10 arithmetic; that is, 1 terabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes.

The FAS3040 does not have an onboard SCSI port because most customers have migrated from SCSI tape to FCAL tape. Customers who still require SCSI tape should utilize the SCSI tape interface.

The Remote LAN Module (RLM) on FAS3040 is offered as a standard feature for all configurations.

3.  System Requirements

FAS3040 systems require Data ONTAP 7.2.1.1 or later releases.

Data ONTAP 7.2.1.1 is designated Generally Available (GA) for the FAS3040 platform. A GA release has met key certifications as indicated in the GA/GD checklist. Earlier releases of Data ONTAP do not support FAS3040.

4.  Software and Protocols

All software and protocols supported on the FAS3000 series are also supported on FAS3040. Please see the FAS3000 data sheet at http://www.netapp.com/ftp/fas3000.pdf

for a complete list of supported software and protocols.

The NearStore® Personality License is supported on FAS3040. With the NearStore Personality option installed, each FAS3040 controller supports 64 concurrent streams. The base system, without NearStore Personality, supports up to 16 concurrent streams per controller.

For current pricing information, see the February 2007 or later Price List or speak with your channel representative or distributor.

Systems purchased using active/active configuration part numbers must be deployed as such; use of an active/active part number as a standalone system voids the system’s service contract.

Storage

FAS3040 can be configured with SATA (250GB or 500GB) and/or FC drives (144GB and 300GB FC disk drives [10K and 15K RPM]).

For maximum system availability, NetApp recommends using multipath HA storage configurations.

NOTE: When configuring storage, make sure that you are using enough storage to prevent a potential storage bottleneck from occurring. Using additional loops to connect to storage shelves provides more data path bandwidth to the storage controller. For example, for an active/active pair in which each controller has six primary storage shelves, use at least two loops with three shelves per loop rather than a single loop with all six shelves attached. Unless you specify how you want the storage loops configured, manufacturing will attach storage to only one dual loop for either standalone or active/active controllers. This does not always provide optimal performance. For more information, see Section 5 of the (NDA) technical report “Aggregate and RAID Group Sizing Guide.”

Expansion Cards

See the System Configuration Guide on the NOW™ Website for current information on available expansion cards and maximum allowable cards per system.

MetroCluster Support

Stretch MetroCluster will be supported with the initial release of the FAS3040 and Data ONTAP 7.2.1.1. Fabric MetroCluster support will be available with a later maintenance release of Data ONTAP, which is TBD.
